The old flair still has, however, got himself in some areas of Vienna. Döbling is regarded as noble district of Vienna, for example. In the old areas like Grinzing, Neustift, Nussdorf and Heiligenstadt you live almost in the Vienna Woods and are away from Vienna downtown with the subway only some minutes. A comfortable evening at Schrammel music in one of the 'Heurigen' serving the 'this year's wine' added in the surrounding vineyards is part of every Wienbesuch just the same as a Viennese Schnitzel, waltz music and coffee house.
His modern face shows Vienna, however, at and over the Danube. A skyscraper after the other one was built there and this district has a skyline today almost like in Manhattan. Some of the skyscrapers, for example the 'Millenium Tower' with his 50 floors and 663ft height need to shun the international comparison under no circumstances. The UNO city, headquarters of international organizations like UNO, UNIDO, OSZE or Opec, also is there. Vienna is the third UNO town worldwide to New York and Geneva. But also big housing estates arise there after the other one. Already 22% of the Viennese live in the three districts (20th-22th) 'over the Danube'. 68.4% of the buildings consist in the Brigittenau (20th) from more than 11 apartments. (Vienna complete: 19.9%, Döbling: 14.0%).
The Danube, or said better the Danube-Island, offers by the way a quite special fun in summer. The island functions as a 'substitute sea' of the Viennese, during the day as a bathing paradise and in the evening as a party mile. The Viennese gave the characteristic, lovingly name 'Copa Cagrana' to this collection of restaurants, bars and discotheques (named after the district Kagran). Big events take place here in summer, e.g. Open Air festivals, the Red-Bull flight show, concerts and much more. Over 3 millions visitors go to the greatest Open air festival, the Donauinselfest, every year. The next is by the way from June 22nd to 24th, 2007 therefore on time in front of flat!
You see, Vienna has many sides: the traditional one, the comfortable one, the modern one, the dreamy one, the fast-moving one, the chic one, ... So look forward to your next Vienna visit!
